Coal India Fast-Tracks Tech-Led Transformation
India’s coal sector is set for a major efficiency boost as Coal Secretary Vikram Dev Dutt chaired a high-level review meeting at Coal India Limited’s headquarters in Kolkata, focusing on accelerating reforms that can enhance production, productivity, and operational excellence. The meeting brought together senior officials to assess the progress of ongoing modernization initiatives and identify areas where technology can further strengthen coal operations. Discussions centered on improving coal quality, increasing supply reliability, and expediting critical infrastructure projects across the organization. A key focus area was the expansion of First Mile Connectivity (FMC) projects, which are designed to streamline coal transportation from mines through mechanized systems. Faster implementation of these projects is expected to reduce logistics costs, improve environmental performance, and enhance supply chain efficiency. Officials also reviewed plans to strengthen coal washing capacities and promote coal gasification projects, both of which are considered vital for improving fuel quality and creating value-added products from domestic coal resources. These initiatives support India’s broader objective of reducing import dependence while maximizing the utilization of indigenous energy assets. The review underscored the importance of adopting advanced technologies, digital monitoring systems, and innovative mining practices to build a more productive and future-ready coal sector. Greater operational efficiency is expected to play a crucial role in meeting the country’s rising energy requirements. The reform agenda aligns with the Government of India’s vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat and its long-term strategy of strengthening energy security through sustainable, technology-driven growth. By modernizing the coal value chain, Coal India aims to enhance reliability, improve environmental performance, and support the nation’s economic expansion. As India continues to witness rising power demand, these reforms are expected to position Coal India as a stronger, more efficient, and technologically advanced energy enterprise capable of supporting the country’s development goals for the decades ahead.
