Coal India Goes Digital with Reform Push

Coal India Limited is accelerating its technology-led transformation as Coal Secretary Vikram Dev Dutt reviewed the Maharatna PSU’s major reform initiatives and launched new digital platforms aimed at improving employee welfare and customer services.
During a comprehensive review meeting in Kolkata, Dutt assessed initiatives being undertaken across Coal India and its subsidiaries to strengthen operational performance, improve efficiency and modernize internal processes. Senior executives from Coal India and its subsidiary companies participated in the discussions.
The review assumes significance as Coal India has positioned the current year as its “Year of Reform and Transform,” placing modernization, digital transformation, process optimization and stronger governance at the centre of its organizational strategy.
A major highlight was the rollout of digital platforms including the CIL MedEX Portal, CIL Swasth Portal and Consumer Portal. The employee-focused platforms are intended to streamline healthcare-related services and improve accessibility, while the consumer platform seeks to make customer interactions more convenient and transparent.
Beyond digitizing individual services, the broader reform programme aims to build a more responsive and technology-enabled Coal India. Digital dashboards and streamlined processes are expected to support faster decision-making, greater transparency and improved service delivery across the organization.
The initiatives also align with the Ministry of Coal’s wider objective of modernizing India’s coal ecosystem while improving productivity, governance and customer orientation. For Coal India, the transformation represents an effort to combine its enormous operational scale with more agile digital systems.
As one of India’s largest public-sector enterprises and the country’s dominant coal producer, Coal India’s digital reforms could have an impact extending beyond the company itself-benefiting employees, coal consumers and the wider energy ecosystem.
