El Niño Shadow Looms Over Monsoon

India’s weather outlook for 2026 has taken a cautious turn as the threat of a strengthening El Niño raises concerns over rainfall, agriculture, and economic stability. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has revised its monsoon forecast downward from 92% to 90% of the Long Period Average, signaling an increased risk of below-normal rainfall.
According to climate assessments, there is now a significant likelihood that El Niño conditions will develop and intensify through the year. Global forecasting agencies project a high probability of the phenomenon persisting into the winter season, increasing the chances of erratic rainfall patterns across India.
Experts warn that the impact may extend far beyond weather. Agriculture, which remains heavily dependent on monsoon rains, could face pressure from prolonged dry spells and uneven rainfall distribution. Reduced farm output may affect food availability and contribute to higher inflation, creating challenges for households and policymakers alike.
Urban and rural water resources could also come under strain if rainfall deficits deepen. Economists are closely watching the evolving situation, as weak monsoon seasons have historically influenced rural consumption, agricultural income, and overall economic momentum.
The concern comes at a time when India is balancing food security, inflation management, and sustainable growth objectives. While forecasting models continue to evolve, climate experts emphasize the need for preparedness, improved water management, and climate-resilient agricultural practices to mitigate potential disruptions.
With the southwest monsoon season approaching, attention is now focused on how strongly El Niño develops and whether India can navigate another year of weather-related uncertainty while protecting its agricultural and economic interests.
