GRSE’s Next-Gen Warship ‘Sanghmitra’ Boosts India’s Ocean Security
Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE) launched its first Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV), “Sanghmitra”, on May 20, 2026, marking a significant milestone in India’s maritime capabilities. The Kolkata-based defence PSU is currently building four such advanced vessels for the Indian Navy. The warship was ceremonially launched by Smt. Sarita Vatsayan, in the presence of Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan, who attended as the Chief Guest. The NGOPVs have a length of ~113 metres, beam of 14.6 metres, displacement of ~3,000 tonnes, top speed of 23 knots, and endurance of 8,500 nautical miles at 14 knots. These specifications position the NGOPVs as formidable platforms for extended maritime operations across diverse mission profiles, with a shallow draught of just 4 metres, enabling effective operation in coastal and littoral waters. The NGOPV program aligns with India’s broader push for Aatmanirbhar Bharat in defence manufacturing, strengthening the Navy’s ability to secure sea lanes, protect national interests, and respond swiftly to regional and global contingencies. This programme is part of the government's efforts to enhance the country's maritime security architecture. The launch of “Sanghmitra” is likely to attract attention from defence experts and industry players, with GRSE's proven track record in shipbuilding and exports, including the delivery of MCGS Barracuda to Mauritius in 2014, India’s first exported warship. The NGOPV programme is expected to have a significant impact on the domestic defence manufacturing sector, with a focus on Make-in-India requirements. GRSE continues to reinforce its reputation as a premier warship builder, having delivered eight ships in a single year, including the simultaneous commissioning of three different classes on March 30, 2026. The company's Chairman & Managing Director, Cmde P.R. Hari (Retd.), highlighted the momentum, stating that the year will witness multiple launches and deliveries, demonstrating GRSE's engineering prowess and commitment to powering India’s maritime future.
