Melkhet Hydro Project Faces Green Scrutiny
A hydroelectric project designed to boost clean energy generation in Uttarakhand is now facing growing environmental concerns. The 24 MW Melkhet Hydro-electric Project, being developed on the Pindar River in Chamoli district, has attracted scrutiny following allegations of ecological violations during construction activities. Residents and environmental groups have alleged that large-scale riverbed excavation and the use of heavy machinery in sensitive Himalayan terrain may have breached environmental guidelines. Concerns have also been raised about the potential long-term impact on the river ecosystem and surrounding biodiversity. The project, being developed by Melkhet Power Private Limited, includes a diversion barrage, a 6.5-kilometre water conductor system, and a surface powerhouse. Once operational, it is expected to generate over 142 million units of electricity annually, contributing to the region’s renewable energy capacity. Supporters of the project argue that hydropower remains a critical component of India’s clean energy transition and helps reduce dependence on fossil fuels. However, environmental experts caution that infrastructure development in fragile mountain ecosystems must be accompanied by strict compliance with ecological safeguards. The controversy highlights a larger challenge facing India’s renewable energy journey-how to accelerate green power generation while preserving sensitive natural habitats. As authorities examine the allegations, the outcome could influence future hydroelectric developments across the Himalayan region. With environmental accountability becoming increasingly important in infrastructure projects, the Melkhet case is emerging as a key test of sustainable development practices in India’s renewable energy sector.
