MGL Gas Prices Climb Again
Consumers across Mumbai and surrounding regions will now pay more for cleaner fuel as Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) has announced another increase in retail gas prices. The company has raised the price of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) by ₹2 per kg, taking it to ₹86 per kg, while Piped Natural Gas (PNG) for domestic users has been increased by ₹0.50 per unit to ₹52 per unit. The latest revision marks MGL’s second price hike in May and signals a shift toward a more dynamic pricing approach as the company responds to fluctuations in fuel procurement costs. The primary reason behind the increase is the shrinking availability of low-cost domestic natural gas under the government’s Administered Pricing Mechanism (APM). With domestic supplies tightening, city gas distributors are increasingly relying on imported liquefied natural gas (LNG), whose prices are influenced by global market conditions, geopolitical developments, and supply chain disruptions. Industry observers believe the higher prices could impact fuel consumption patterns, particularly among cost-sensitive consumers and transport operators. The traditional cost advantage of CNG over petrol and diesel has narrowed, although it continues to remain one of the more economical and environmentally friendly fuel options available in urban India. The revision also comes at a time when electric vehicle adoption is steadily accelerating, creating fresh competition for city gas distributors. Despite this, demand for CNG and PNG remains strong due to their widespread infrastructure, convenience, and lower emissions profile. For MGL, the price adjustment is aimed at maintaining supply reliability while balancing rising input costs. As global energy markets remain volatile, further revisions could depend on future gas availability and procurement trends. The development highlights the growing challenges faced by India’s city gas distribution sector as it navigates changing energy dynamics while continuing to support the country’s cleaner energy transition.
