NTPC’s Green Fuel Move in Focus

Shares of NTPC Limited are likely to remain in focus after the power major initiated a significant step towards cleaner energy by floating a tender for the procurement of 100,000 tonnes of biomass pellets for use in co-firing across its thermal power plants. The move is part of NTPC’s strategy to gradually replace 5–10% of conventional coal fuel with biomass, helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions while improving sustainability in thermal power generation. According to the tender details, NTPC announced the procurement process on May 18, inviting domestic competitive bids from suppliers capable of delivering biomass pellets over a 12-month period from the date of contract award. The company has specified that the pellets must meet quality standards, including a minimum calorific value of 3,500 kcal/kg, ensuring operational efficiency while integrating biomass into existing power plant fuel systems. Industry experts believe the tender is a positive development for NTPC’s long-term clean energy roadmap, as biomass co-firing is increasingly being seen as a practical solution for reducing carbon emissions from coal-based power generation. The initiative is also expected to provide a boost to India’s domestic biomass pellet industry by creating fresh demand for locally manufactured green fuel, supporting the broader Atmanirbhar Bharat vision. NTPC’s latest move aligns with the Government of India’s larger push to promote renewable and alternate fuel sources while reducing fossil fuel dependence in the power sector. As India’s largest power producer under the Ministry of Power, NTPC has set an ambitious target of achieving 60 GW renewable energy capacity by 2032, and the biomass co-firing initiative is another step towards lowering its carbon footprint and strengthening its clean energy transition.
