OMCs Reject E20 Contamination Claims After Nationwide Tests
Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have pushed back against claims of excessive chloride and moisture contamination in E20 petrol, saying an extensive nationwide testing exercise found fuel supplies within prescribed quality specifications. The quality assessment covered multiple stages of the supply chain, including refineries, ethanol distilleries, storage depots, tank trucks and retail fuel outlets. According to the OMCs, the findings did not provide scientific evidence supporting allegations of widespread contamination in ethanol-blended petrol. Fuel surveillance has also been intensified at retail outlets. Water-ingress and density checks are being conducted multiple times each day, while mobile fuel-testing laboratories are being deployed to strengthen field-level monitoring. The exercise reportedly identified only two isolated cases involving elevated chloride levels, and corrective measures were taken immediately. OMCs maintain that these instances do not indicate a broader quality problem across the E20 supply network. The clarification is significant as India expands its ethanol-blending programme to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels and strengthen domestic energy security. Consumer confidence in fuel quality will remain critical as E20 petrol becomes increasingly common across the country. With nationwide monitoring continuing, OMCs have reiterated that maintaining prescribed fuel standards and protecting consumers remain central priorities throughout the production, transportation and retail chain.
