RINL Pensioners Seek Fresh Chance for Higher Pension

Around 1,200 retired employees of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant are seeking government intervention after reportedly losing access to higher pension benefits because they could not respond to EPFO demand letters within the prescribed timeframe. The issue traces back to the Supreme Court’s November 4, 2022 judgment concerning higher pension under the Employees’ Pension Scheme. Eligible retirees subsequently received demand notices requiring additional contributions, but some former RINL employees say the amounts involved-reportedly ranging from ₹10 lakh to ₹40 lakh-were difficult to arrange within the available time. For pensioners dependent largely on retirement income, mobilising such substantial sums at short notice posed a serious financial challenge. Some retirees also cite unfamiliarity with digital communication, uncertainty surrounding the calculation methodology and litigation over aspects of the pension process as reasons for not responding within the deadline. The affected pensioners are not necessarily seeking exemption from the required contribution. Their central demand is another opportunity to deposit the applicable amount and have their higher-pension claims examined on merit. The matter raises a broader policy question: should missing a procedural deadline permanently outweigh decades of service when an applicant remains willing to fulfil the financial requirements? With retirement benefits directly affecting the long-term financial security of elderly employees and their families, the pensioners are seeking a solution that balances procedural discipline with fairness and reasonable consideration of individual circumstances.
