RITES Takes Vande Bharat Global Push

RITES Limited is preparing to take India’s flagship semi-high-speed train, Vande Bharat Express, beyond domestic borders as the PSU accelerates efforts to develop a standard-gauge international version of the train for overseas markets.
The ambitious initiative marks a major strategic shift for RITES, which is now positioning itself not just as a railway consultancy giant, but as a serious player in the global rolling stock and rail infrastructure market.
The new standard-gauge Vande Bharat model is being designed specifically for electrified passenger corridors in emerging economies, particularly across Africa and Latin America, where demand for modern, affordable, and energy-efficient railway systems is rapidly increasing.
The project is also seen as India’s strongest attempt yet to challenge the growing global dominance of China’s railway giant CRRC Corporation, which has aggressively expanded its presence across developing nations through large-scale rail exports.
Unlike India’s broad-gauge domestic rail network, the international version of Vande Bharat will adopt the globally accepted standard-gauge configuration, enabling compatibility with railway systems in most foreign countries. The train will also need to meet strict global certification and safety standards before commercial deployment.
Industry experts believe the initiative could transform Vande Bharat into India’s flagship rail export product, opening up new revenue streams and strengthening the country’s engineering export ecosystem under the broader Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.
The move is expected to create opportunities for Indian manufacturers, component suppliers, and engineering firms through export-linked production and global project partnerships. Funding support through export financing and international lines of credit may also play a major role in expanding India’s railway diplomacy.
As a PSU under the Ministry of Railways, RITES already has a strong international presence in consultancy and project execution. However, this initiative signals a far bigger ambition — positioning India as a global supplier of advanced railway technology and next-generation passenger train solutions.
With countries across the developing world modernising transport infrastructure, RITES’ global Vande Bharat push could become one of India’s most significant infrastructure export stories in the coming years.
